Wyler's film "These Three," a rarely seen 1936 adaptation of Hellman's stage smash
"The Children's Hour," had to be tailored to pass censorship under the Hays Code.
Hellman's script met the challenge, and Wyler's picture with Joel McCrea
and Merle Oberon became an international screen hit. FREE

"The Children's Hour" starring Audrey Hepburn, Shirley MacLaine, and James Garner was declared
"one of the most finely wrought dramas in the history of the screen" by the MOTION PICTURE HERALD. In this version, Wyler finally got to film
Hellman's original story about two school teachers whose lives are shattered by a child's lie.

Eastman House film preservationist and curator Pat Loughney introduces William Wyler's
film of "Dead End," a 1937 classic from a Hellman screenplay. A Best
Picture nominee, it features Humphrey Bogart and Claire Trevor in a class drama set on New York's Lower East Side. The film introduced the
popular "Dead End Kids" and established Bogart as a tough guy in the
movies. The source play written by Sidney Kingsley influenced FDR to push for legislation to clean up the slums of New York City.
